Song: "Mi Gente"
Artist: J Balvin
J Balvin's new hit has been receiving overwhelming rhetoric from the public as it passes Despacito on Spotify's Global Top 50 becoming the most listened song daily on the streaming music service. The music video for the song also gathered over 380 million views in less than two months and it peaks at number 28 on Billboard's Hot 100. The song is very upbeat, having a half reggaeton, half electronic vibe, making it very easy to dance to. The increasing repercussion this song is attaining reflects upon the constant growth of the Latin American music industry as a consequence of Despacito's success. J Balvin has recorded other successful songs, however, they have never been so famous around the rest of the world. I gave the song 4 stars because although it is very happy and catchy, it is easy to get sick of, unlike Despacito, which means that its fame will last much less as people will stop listening to it as much.
Song: "New Rules"
Artist: Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa's new single from her recently released self-titled album has achieved great lengths due mostly to its engaging music video. Like most people, I first heard the song when I saw it on my "recommended" list of videos on YouTube, and decided to watch, for I had already heard about Dua´s collaboration with Martin Garrix "Scared to Be Lonely". The song consists of a casual night with friends but with a great choreography that fits among the lyrics and beat of the song. So far, the song is number 12 on Spotify's Global Top 50 and 90 on Billboard's Hot 100, which are great accomplishments for the young, inexperienced singer. Additionally, the music video has gathered over 100 million views. Dua will likely grow a lot throughout the following months considering she fits the music industry perfectly with her pop/dance music and beautiful youth The song earned 5 stars because I have yet to discover one negative aspect of it, with its catchy lyrics and harmonizing beat.
Artist: Imagine Dragons
With their new album Revolve just released, the band has bet on “Thunder” to be the lead single, and their other famous song Believer as a promotional single. So far, the song has not disappointed in the charts, being number 11 on Spotify and 54 on Billboard's Hot 100, demonstrating that its success is in constant increase. The music video posted on YouTube has also been viewed over 100 million times. Imagine Dragons has always maintained this rock/alternative style with hard beats and strong vocals, but Thunder stands for its pop vibe and lighter lyrics, which allows all ages to adore it. I do not personally believe it is their best work, for that would be Bet My Life, nevertheless, I can understand its success and recognize the beauty of the song. I gave Thunder 3 stars because it is not exactly my type of music, but I believe it can lead Imagine Dragons towards a broader audience. The album's best song in my opinion is Believer, which is more their style.
